Outreach Summary

The purpose of this project is to apply knowledge gained in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program at Central Washington University. Basic materials that the final product will be constructed with are; E-Glass Fiberglass Chopped Strand Mat, General Purpose Fiberglass Cloth, Fiberglass Cloth Tape, and Epoxy Resin.

Benchmark Product

In this project, the benchmark product will be an OEM Jeep TJ Hardtop.

Analyses

There are 12 analyses that were done to calculate how the hardtop will perform. These analyses covered: 1. Designing a tubular frame to carry a 250 lb load safely. 2. Ensuring the critical load the side panels can carrying is significantly lower than the 250 lb load. 3. The bolt size required to join the panels. 4. The quantity and spacing of the bolts. 5. Calculating the flexural rigidity of the top panels. 6. Evaluating how the composite layup should be layered. 7. Calculating the material quantity that is necessary to construct the panels. 8. Determining the proper adhesive to use to install the side windows. 9. Calculating the load that be placed on the panels in storage. 10. Calculating the weld size required to weld the tubular frame. 11. Calculating the heat loss reduction with the new hard top. 12. Calculating the noise reduction with the new hard top.

Construction

The first phase in this project is to construct sample pieces to ensure that the layup will perform within the boundaries of the requirements. The second phase is to construct the shells of the Top Panels. Below is a broad overview of the process that used to test and construct the 5 panels needed for this project.

Testing

To test the analysis data that was calculated a three-point bend test will be conducted, an infrared gun will be used, a decibel reader will be used, a compression test will be performed, and tensile tests will be done.
